Search for either of these and you will find them in the same lists, under the same headings. That grouping is about topic, not about similarity — and it leads people to compare them as if they were two options for the same job.
They are not. Understanding why makes both of them easier to reason about.
What that actually means
The clearest way to hold the difference is to ask what role each one plays.
A NAD+ precursor is a raw material. NAD+ is a coenzyme involved in a very large number of reactions, and precursors are compounds the body converts into it. The premise is straightforward: NAD+ availability declines with age, so supply more of the input.
MOTS-c is not a raw material. It is a signal — a short message about energy status. Its proposed value is not in supplying anything, but in changing what the cell decides to do.
Supplying an input and sending an instruction are different interventions with different failure modes. More input does nothing if the system is not input-limited. A stronger instruction does nothing if the machinery cannot act on it.

The evidence bases are also asymmetric, and in a direction people often guess wrong.

Mostly animal research, with a small amount of early human data that is not yet conclusive.
NAD+ precursors have accumulated a meaningful set of human trials — including randomised, placebo-controlled ones. Those trials have generally been better at showing that blood NAD+ levels rise than at showing that anything downstream improves, which is its own caveat, but the trials exist.
MOTS-c has far less human data of any kind, and what exists is mostly observational.
