What is MOTS-c?

MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded inside mitochondrial DNA rather than in the cell nucleus — which makes it unusual. Research interest centres on the idea that mitochondria use it to send signals to the rest of the cell about energy status. Most of what is known comes from cell and animal work, with a small but growing body of human observational data.
